Anchorage

We are now at the Mt View RV Park in Palmer.
It is about 40 miles NE of Anchorage and a good spot
to regroup before we head down onto the Kenai Peninsula.

I've dropped the truck off at a Ford Dealer in Wasilla for some routine service
and some minor electrical repairs and today we did some shopping, joined
Costco and found some good barbecue.

Did I say Barbecue?
Yep Barbecue.
Turnagain Arm Pit Barbecue.
If you find yourself in Anchorage you owe it to yourself to give them a try.
The baby backs were meaty...  smoked to perfection and very moist.
Their motto:  "Life's too short for a half rack"
I fully agree!

We've had some clouds and rain obscuring the best of our drive the past two days.
We drove some beautiful highways but unfortunately the scenery does not
always reveal itself fully.

Still when it peeks out - its majestic!

We spent sunday night in the shadow of the Matanuska Glacier.
27 miles long and 4 miles wide - it is the largest glacier in the US that
is accessible by car.

Here it peeks from below the clouds.

Southbound down the Glenn Highway towards Anchorage
we follow the Matanuska River

Here the river valley is framed between the trees.

And the setting for another self portrait.

The summer wildflowers are bursting forth!

Today we took a short spin down from Anchorage to the Turnagain Arm.
It is an arm of the sea - part of the Cook Inlet - that separates
Anchorage from the Kenai Peninsula.

We tried to catch it before the clouds obscured the mountains but got there too late.

Todays tides in the Turnagain were over 36' from low tide to high tide.

These tides rush back into the arm in what is known as a "Bore Tide"
A wall of water up to 10' tall rushes up the arm followed by other walls till the tide
has returned.   These Bore Tides only happen at certain times and tomorrow should
be a good time to see one so I will roust the troops and make another
90 minute drive down to the arm to try and see it.

  8. Greg:

I'm in the Keys again as I read this - wondering if anyone was out surfing the Bore? Weather looks similar (clouds that is) how are the bugs? Or is it to early in the season?
